21A – Reading Reflection No. 2

I read the book about how to have a good social media page.
The general argument of the book was that it is possible to be popular on social media if you put the work into it.
The book connected with the course in how it seemed to believe it is possible to be successful in whatever you want to create if you do it right. For example, this class seems to encourage realistic business ideas and the implementation of them with the awareness of location. For example, Burger21 was a hip place that served unique burgers and wine. The location of it in Ocala was a mistake because 1) the food wasn't that great so honestly it was a mistake to even open anywhere 2) Ocala isn't known for having the richest people 3) the culture doesn't support odd things like that. A place for that is in the Villages or maybe even Gainesville possibly even Orlando but there's a lot of competition. The book of social media would support the idea of a blog on weird burgers paired with wine. Fancy and unique.
Create a post for your company in which they introduce themselves to customers and give insight on what to expect from their blog (and make it interesting enough someone would follow the account).
The biggest surprise was when the book said it is important to be one of the first people to make an account. Join social media early. The author bragged about being really popular on Google+ but honestly, that's like saying you're popular with middle-aged moms. Like, that's nice, but I really wouldn't care unless I knew a ton of middle-aged moms. I thought quality content was the main determination of your success because people have 5 minutes of fame and fade away pretty quick.

  1. Hey Mikalee,
I loved how you wrote how you spoke in this assignment and how you both appreciated and criticized the author. It is good advice though and if your target audience is middle ages women then, well, if it ain't broken you know. If you want money I agree that a biog city, with a good area is your prime location. Ocala should not have been the sight of his money making splendor.

    1. It isn't that Ocala is a poor city. There are plenty of businesses that can thrive in Ocala. The problem with Burger 21 was how unique it was. Ocala cannot appreciate a progressive burger joint that serves alcohol with the burgers. A more tourist-filled, experimental city would be better. Ocala is more about known franchises, like PDQ, Chickfila, Panda Express, McDonald's, and honestly I don't know how Burger King stays open but they do and fit in Ocala. Familiar fast food is the way to go.
I like your comment about how it isn't broken if middle aged moms are your target.

    2. I say the joint is progressive because any place that offers gluten free bread is progressive in my opinion.

  2. Hi Mikalee,
I really enjoyed that you chose to read a book regarding to social media and how to successfully create an attractive page. This is such a relevant topic in our society today and as a young adult myself, I am surrounded by social media and first hand have been able to see how much it affects not only my life, but the majority of my age group as well. Social media has become such a huge influence on our lives in everything that we do including communication with one another, in our jobs, our homes, etc. We rely so much on social media and technology in general that adapting to this change is something that makes a company or entrepreneur so successful when knowing how to appropriately use social media and technology to our advantage. I loved reading your reflection and learning your own perspective on this book in general.
